I Dream

I dream of the day when I can walk down the street and see children studying in school instead of working forcibly in a factory.

I dream of the day when dowry is completely abolished. (Dowry is against the law but like I said... there's no one there to listen)

I dream of the day when garbage cans will have only the trash that people discard and not a baby (especially a girl baby).

I dream of the day when education is given more thought than cricket.

I dream of the day when illiteracy is wiped out from my country.

I dream of the day when HIV/AIDS is wiped out from my country.

I dream of the day when all villages in India will have electricity and running water.

I dream of the day when the India the freedom fighters had dreamed of becomes a reality.

I dream of the day when people say, "I'm proud to be Indian." and mean it.

To quote a line from the movie 'Rang De Basanti', "No country is perfect. You have to make it perfect."

Oh Bee-have

So I've had quite an exciting day. Here I was online doing a bit of blogging on friendship day and my dear mother calls me and is like "Farah... don't go out on the balcony right now there's a bee hive on the clothes rack." My instant reaction... "OH SHIT!" And then she goes on to explain like how dad had gone out on the balcony in the morning and there was nothing there and within the hour when she went out there was a swarm of bees in the corner of the clothes rack and she saw it just in time before putting the clothes on the rack.. blah blah blah! My blog entry about friendship day went down the toilet as I started freaking out about the bees.

Now I'm terrified of bees because of this movie I saw where these killer bees were going around killing people and it was sooo freakishly icky. Now we don't get these kind here so they were just your run of the mill honey bees but they have stingers too and they are not as cute and cuddly like in the cartoons.

So I go into the living room and pull back the curtains and find this heart/udder shaped swarm in one corner of the clothes rack and thank my stars that I'm on the other side of the glass door. I quickly go and get my camera and take a few pictures and send it to my mom at work. It was twice as big as she saw it earlier in the morning... and yes I was freaking out and was thinking that by the time our building maintenence people come in the evening at 5 the hive would be HUUUUUGE!

My friends try to calm me down by telling me that bee hives are lucky and were telling me that a lady had a hive in her back yard and when she didn't remove it it was all around her house and she had honey worth $3 million dollars and she became rich and is now breeding bees. And I'm thinking... hmmmm I am unemployed but yeah no... rather take my chances on a lottery to become a millionaire.

So my mom comes home in sometime and our building watchman comes with these two guys and there begins our "Sting Operation". Now were thinking of ways to get rid of it and one of the guys was like fire will get rid of them and the other who probably had a boner for the bees was like "Oh no.. that will kill them." And I was like "So... kill em'!" (sorry I'm not merciful when it comes to creatures that can kill me in one sting/bite). And then we thought let's smoke em' out. We get a metal bowl like thing we use to burn sandalwood and incense charcoal when we pray and that doesn't give us much smoke but the bees do start flying away. But not entirely... and then our men decide to take a long broom and break the hive by standing inside and manuvering the handle from a little space between the balcony door (where the open bits were sealed off by a few newspapers)... ahhhh success and lo and behold they had just started to build the comb and it was around 4-5 inches big.

Now the bees were pissed off and flying off here and there and we're like now what? Idea no. 365739 hot water in a spray can. Did that and well it seemed to work. Just then our watchman gets a call and it's the lady below our apartment and the bees apparently started making a hive there. (Talk about persistence) and they were there with a vengence because the hive in their balcony was bigger than ours.

So after that ordeal some bees were still flying around on the balcony so mom and I decided to smoke them out. We made a small fire in that metal thing again and this time added camphor and sandalwood shavings and wooooo smoke city. We did that a couple of times and now hopefully we're bee free.

And yes I did get my first sting today. I was putting out another bowl of camphor smoke in the night and I had worn a sweater (in 47 degrees heat) just incase there were any stray bees there and i felt something prick me and I thought ahh it's just the sweater biting me ohhh but nooo... I have a nice small bump on my arm. Apparently a bee managed to sting me but I think it was a bit disoriented with the smoke and it was a hit n' miss and just felt like a sweater bite... it smarts a bit now.

But anyhoos... take a look at the pic of the hive. It's icky!!

Doesn't it look like a cow's udder? lol

Potter Mania

Churchill, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Prince William, Orlando Bloom and then Harry Potter was the next big thing to come out of UK. This bespectacled wizard has creeped into the hearts of kids and adults alike.

I recently went to see Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix and it was brilliant. They changed a few things here and there but showed most of the prominant scences from the book. My fav. as always was Professor Snape played by Alan Rickman and he's so delightfully sarcastic that my new fav. word is "obviously". The new character added in the movie was Luna Lovegood played by Evana Lynch. She was soooo brilliant and gave justice to Luna's spacey character. Of course the rest of the cast was good too and Imelda Staunton played Dolres Umbridge so well that you'd totally despise the character more in the movie than you did in the book. Of course Daneil, Rupert and Emma were great as usual but the new characters were simply over the top.
I bought Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on the same day and met a Harry Potter look-a-like. He was a gujju bhai named Dhawal Dave and well er he looked like Harry at a distance and then when you went closer his nose took over his whole face. hehehe Anyways the book was bittersweet with lots of my fav. characters dieing including my fav. ok I won't say just incase you other Potter fans haven't read the book yet which would be a pitty because I've read it 2 times already. hehehehe But on the whole it was a good brief ending to the book with Harry's scar not hurting for a very long time. :)

I am gonna miss this boy a lot because it was fun reading about him and his friends. I'm just looking forward to the last two movies and then no more Harry. siiiigh!

First Loves

They say that you can never forget your first love. You can get over it but never forget. I remember my first love. I never got him because he was on vacation in Dubai from South Africa and I met him just 4 or 5 times. The reason I fell for him was because he was just so great to talk to and he listened to what I had to say and he was ohhhh soooo HOT!

There were guys after him but I could never forget him and I know that if he goes down on one knee and propose to me I will be his forever. Hahaha so much for getting over him but yeah I am over him but I'll never forget him. I just wish I knew where he was so I could tell him that I once was in love with him and that he was the first guy to make me feel like that. :)

OH MY GOD!

I was reading our weekly friday magazine today aptly named 'Friday' and I came across this article about a woman named Prudence Emma Staite. In her picture, she was standing next to what looked like a clay sculpture of the Burj Al Arab. Now I appreciate all forms of art and respect all artists so I started reading the article. By the time I finished my mouth had started to water. The reason... she's an artist that creates amazing works of art using the best thing nature and man created together... CHOCOLATE! And that Burj Al Arab was no clay... it was all chocolate! Unfortunately I wasn't aware that there was some event called ChocoLatte happening in Bur Juman or I would've gone there and kissed this woman's hands and offered to be her assistant for a low (negotiable) salary.

She is an amazing food artist who not only does sculptures but actually makes, wait for it... EDIBLE ROOMS! She's made one which had a working chocolate chandelier, a solid chocolate fire place with chocolate logs in it, chocolate vases, chocolate walls, lickable sugar wallpaper... she really brought the story of Hansel and Gretel to life. Imagine walking into a room like that and taking a bite of the mantelpiece or licking the nose on one of the portraits. Prudence can give Willy Wonka a run for his money.

To quote Prudence, "Chocolate should be respected like diamonds are: a pure luxury that is beautiful, amazing and gives you a truly pleasurble experience. Not something you can just eat then discard the wrapper." True... so true. Whenever I eat chocolate I don't chew down on it. I take a bite, swirl it around with my tongue, let it melt and then make it slide down my throat till I can actually feel it settling in my tummy. The after taste that lingers in my my mouth is sooo heavenly. I always find myself closing my eyes savoring it and then looking at the empty wrapper in my hand thinking "Oh yeah that was gooooood!".

Prudence Emma Staite has entered my 'People I want to meet before I die" list and I hope I can see her create those delicious creations someday. Check her out on http://www.foodisart.co.uk/foodisart.html In the meantime I'll be introducing myself like so, "Hello I'm Farah and I'm a Chocoholic."
