What is it with this city? Why is it hell bent on breaking records? The biggest! The tallest! The grandest!!!! All it's doing is breaking a person... mainly the middle class asian population. (And by Asian I mean Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Chinese, Filipino, Bangladeshi etc etc)
The stupid toll system is gonna start from July only in Dubai... it's such a small city it doesn't need a toll booth. And the reason?? It'll curb traffic... yeah right... it'll infact increase the traffic.
I miss the old Dubai really... I got this in an email once about Life in Dubai. This is an almost perfect description of our lives in Dubai!
- You think California is cold. (I've never been to California so I wouldn't know)
- You're STILL shaking the sand out of your shoes. (Yup)
- You think the guy that designed the road system was smoking pot when he did it. (Hah! So damn true! The roads are sooo f****d up and they are gonna be even more fucked once the metro starts)
- You don't look twice when a $250,000 car drives by. (Nope... so used to seeing them and the person sitting in the car has the personality of a pot noodle!)
- You got kicked out of school for having a fight outside school during the weekend. (Yes it's happened to a friend of mine lol)
- You know a friend who won a free car from the local mall. Twice. (And it was a rich friend too! UGGGH! MIDDLE CLASS GETS EXPLOITED AGAIN!)
- Some dumb ass American/European asked you if you rode a camel to school. And you told him that you've seen more Ferraris, Mercedes, BMW's, and Porshce's on the streets of Dubai than you've ever seen in the USA or Europe (You know my desi friends back in Bombay asked me that and I humored them saying that we lived in tents and that I was gonna be a harem mistress someday)
- You know what the Burj Al Arab is. (hell yeah... oh it's a 7 Star hotel btw)
- Every fast food chain delivers until 4 in the morning. (Duh... sometimes us clubbers need food after the partaying! LONG LIVE AL REEF! God I miss those days!)
- If the AC stopped working at home you had to stay in a hotel. (lol yes that's happened to me only we went over to a friends place)
- You had to look both ways crossing a one-way street. (absolutely... there are some freaks who can't drive and apparently can't read!)
- You run into someone you know at every airport. (everytime)
- You have a passport, but no driver's license. (yeah-ha! that's because I'm too damn scared to drive on the roads out here)
- You remember when the first McDonalds had its grand opening... in Al Ghurair Center circa 1995:) (yup... what a mobfest that was... to think no one had eaten burgers in their lives before!)
- You got days off school for Christian and Muslim holidays. (I went to an Indian school so we got the Indian holidays as well)
- You are used to giving directions using landmarks; street names confuse the hell out of you. (I have no idea what street I live on... I just tell people the nearest landmark to my building and everyone knows and is comfortable with it)
- Friday was the official weekend. (It still is)
- Your parents told you it was too hot to go outside. (Yup)
- Casio G-Shock: the only watches you've ever owned. (God every kid had that... and then the Baby-G came out for girls and then the Alba Spoon... people in UAE are sheep... sheep I tell you!!!! Or monkeys... monkey see monkey do! monkey wear weird things I wear too!!!)
- You and your friends all thought you were gangstas. (Bwahahahahaha... the boys did at least... the Al Shaab, Karama, Satwa Gangs. lameasses! psst... please don't hurt me!)
- You've been to the worlds greatest Gold Souk (mall). (of course)
- Sports stores were always 90% football gear, and every kid ended up buying a number 9 Ronaldo Brazil shirt. (lol that is true)
- The image of one camel mounting another is still burned into your childhood memory. (MY EYES! MY EYES! MY EYES!!)
- There was actually a point to owning a SUV and now you're extremely pissed at how the USA has transformed a true off-road utility vehicle into a fashion statement for "soccer moms." (hmmph)
- You know for a fact that the guys from the Dubai Mens College can drive a Nissan Patrol 28 times around a roundabout on two wheels. And they learned how to do it on the bicycle cars in Safa Park. (Oh yeah... i have soooo seen this)
- You smoked sheesha and would be shocked to find that the pipe would be considered drug paraphernalia in the USA. (Hoodaaaa! Wahad shisha nana, Nescafe, masafi, wa friskies! Please!
Translation: Hoodaaa (chick's name)! One mint shisha, Nescafe, Masafi water and friskies (yummy curly fries that taste like aaloo bhajiya) please! *insert cheesy grin*)
